About Child Therapy with Heather
Hi! My name is Heather and I’m so glad you are here. As someone who participated in therapy as an adolescent, I understand that relationship and connection are the most important aspects of therapy. I believe that all clients deserve to feel safe and heard and it is my goal to create an environment which encourages trust.
I enjoy working with children and adolescents because they are each unique, fun, insightful, and capable. Many of the clients I work with struggle with anxiety, grief, family and/or peer relationship challenges, or academic stress. I love to incorporate both play and talk into my therapy sessions and use each as a tool to cultivate relationship and encourage skill building because, while being a kid should be fun, it can also be really hard at times.
I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) to help children build the skills they need to cope with current symptoms, identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, and increase self-confidence - all leading to lasting behavior change.
I also use mindfulness and relaxation strategies to teach children how to slow down in an increasingly fast-paced and demanding world. I understand the significance of environment and love working with parents to support behavior change at home and to encourage positive parent-child relationships.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science from UNC-Chapel Hill and my Master of Social Work from Appalachian State University. I then earned my License in Clinical Social Work and have been practicing since 2019, first in hospice care then as a therapist in a local school system.
When I’m not with clients, you can find me spending time with my family, running, or working on a never-ending list of house projects!
If you think I’d be a good fit for you and your child, please reach out. I’m happy to help and can’t wait to meet you!
